Solved: Configure the Form Control in Power Apps | Microsoft Dynamics 365

Quick views in Dynamics are undoubtedly helpful, allowing users to view information on related records. However, what if you could take it a step further and edit those related records without navigating away? That’s where the Form Control comes in, offering the same functionality as Quick Views but with the added capability of editing related records directly from the form.

How to Add the Form Control in Power Apps

In the Power Apps maker portal, navigate to the main form where you want to implement the Form Control, such as the contact form. Consider various use cases, like enabling customer service reps to update account information from a case or facilitating updates to an account’s entitlement from a work order.

Before adding the Form Control, ensure you create enough space for it on the form. It’s advisable to create a new form specifically for nesting to keep it minimal and avoid unnecessary scrolling. Once you’ve prepared the layout, locate the Components button in the ribbon and select the Form control in the Display section.

Drag the Form Control onto the desired location on the form and select the Lookup column you want the control to reference, such as the Customer Name field. Keep in mind that the list of forms to reference will only display main forms. After selecting the field and form, hit “Done” to complete the setup.

After publishing the form, you’ll notice the Form Control pop up on the form editor. Although it may initially show “Source record not selected,” don’t worry, as this is expected behavior. Once the form is published, you’ll see the nested form displayed on the contact record in Dynamics, allowing seamless access to related record details.

However, there are a couple of nuances to consider when using this control, such as its compatibility with specific forms and parent-child relationships. Additionally, updates made through the Form Control will automatically save changes to the related record, streamlining data management processes.
