Microsoft Copilot Studio is a low-code tool that allows users to customize Copilot for Microsoft 365 and build standalone Copilot solutions. It brings together a set of powerful conversational capabilities, including custom GPTs, generative AI plugins, and manual topics. Copilot Studio makes it simple and fast to build and publish a plugin directly to Copilot for Microsoft 365 using a drag-and-drop low-code approach that includes the logic and data connectivity to answer questions based on your business data and processes.

Copilot for Microsoft 365 has foundational capabilities, like the ability to answer questions, create content, and reason over data. Copilot for Microsoft 365 has access to the Microsoft Graph and is integrated into the Microsoft 365 apps that millions of people use every day.

On November 1, 2023, Copilot for Microsoft 365 became generally available for enterprises, and already, customers like Visa, BP, Honda, Pfizer, and Chevron, and also partners such as Accenture, EY, KPMG, Kyndryl, and PwC, are betting on Copilot. New Work Trend Index data shows that already, Copilot makes people more productive and creative, and saves time. It’s clear from the data: the age of copilots is here.

So previously in the Power Platform, you could create chat bots, or what were called Power Virtual Agents (PVA). These bots had guided topics that would help carry a conversation with the person interacting with it. Not to get too much in the weeds about power virtual agents, but you could create logic and fallback topics in order for the bot to help provide the best answer possible.

But ultimately, these conversations had to be “hard coded” into the bot. Meaning, you had to tell the bot which topic to follow, which questions to ask, etc. If the bot did not find an appropriate topic, it would resort tot he fallback topic and would provide a valuable experience to the end user.

Now with Copilot Studio, your bots are going to get an instant upgrade. They’ll now be able to use the Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities of Copilot. If you have experience building power virtual agents, the experience in Microsoft Copilot Studio is going to feel really familiar.

You can create different topics, on a canvas and connect the different topics through arrows to build out the logical path that this copilot will follow. These arrows are what build out the chronological order that your copilot is going to follow in conversation.

So why is this important? It’s just an upgraded PVA, right? Well, no. It’s important because as an organization, you may want these chat bots for different internal and external uses.

Let’s start with an example.

Have you ever been on a website and in the bottom right hand corner, you see a “Chat With Us” window will pop up? You may not personally find these useful, but they do help in answering customers’ questions. This way companies can save money and resources by not needing a person to answer common or redundent questions.

Now these copilots have generative AI capabilities and can answer the specific questions for the organization. Side note: this is something ChatGPT would not be able to do since it doesn’t have access to your company resources.

Internally, Microsoft has developed a vast array of copilots and have begun implementing them into the dynamic space. These are designed to do things like help sellers sell more and help customer service agents help more people. The capabilities and the responses that these copilots provide are largely determined by Microsoft. But now with Copilot Studio, organizations can create specific internal bots to answer there questions.

Do you want Copilot to provide your sales teams with specific answers that are related to a custom process? Questions that sales members may have about the specific organizational industry or the current product line. Answers to these questions are now integrated into your internal copilots and helps your teams deliver more.

Just know if you begin using these copilots, you can also monitor their use. There is a copilot analytics area in the Copilot studio where you can view the times your bot was used, the success rate of your bot, and more. Also, the integrated admin center offers full visibility of both Copilot for Microsoft 365 customization and standalone copilots.
